This is my latest Scimitar. It's a 1980 GTC, number 79 of only
442 built by the factory. The car is based on the last Reliant incarnation of the GTE the SE6b.
The 6b's were notable amongst other things for their use of the 2.8 Ford
Cologne engine instead of the 3.0 Essex. Ford stopped producing the Essex in
1980 and Reliant had to use what was available. Both engines produced roughly the same BHP,
but the Essex had extra torque of 13ft lb at 3000rpm, leading some people
suggest that the cologne wasn't on a par with the older unit. However having
driven both, I would conclude that they do feel different but both are
equally up to the job. Upon entering my
ownership this car
was in standard
specification with its' Cologne engine , Solex Pierburg carburettor and 4 speed manual gearbox with Laycock
overdrive on 3rd and 4th. The blue interior was showing signs of age
and 2002 Olympic Blue respray had begun to peal and crack.
The previous owner covered just 25,000 miles in his
21yrs of ownership, and has lavished £1000's maintaining it. Unfortunately
the respray he had done in 2002 is a disaster as the paint has cracked along
the waistline and bonnet. This is something I hope to address soon.
